Day 27: Up and Down Baden-Powell

We set an ambitious goal for today before we went to bed. We were going to shoot for a 20 mile day to get to little jimmy campground. The only problem with that goal is Mt. Baden-Powell. Our previous nights’ camp at Guffy campground was at ~6500ft and the peak of Mt. Baden-Powell stands at 9399ft and the PCT comes within .1 mile from the peak. So you can see the crux here.

When we left camp in the morning we stopped at a beautifully placed water cache right outside of camp to fill up for the day’s hike so we could avoid filtering at a spring in a few miles. Then we left the wind blocked safety of guffy campground and set out into what we found out later was a wind advisory amount of wind. Great, another day of 25-30 mph constant winds with 40 mph gusts. I blamed the wind on Numbers (Cindy) who met back up with us at camp after both of our groups took a break for the kick off.

We could see the town of Wrightwood below us as we hiked for much of the morning which made me think of my friend, Jeasika for much of the morning as she is from this town originally. I even tried to text her before we started our Baden-Powell climb to tell her I passed her hometown today and that all I know of it is that it is a windy hell for a hiker and I don’t like it. Unfortunately I haven’t had service all day so the text didn’t go through (and this post will likely be delayed from the usual post time, apologies in advance).

The second time we crossed highway 2 brought us to the bottom of Mt. Baden-Powell (parking lot at elevation ~6500). We took a bit of a lunch/nap break before the climb. We then started the 4 mile, ~2900ft climb to the peak. This was slow going on steep switchbacks. We arrived at the peak just before 3pm and spent a little time taking pictures, signing the peak register, and resting our tired feet.

After the peak of Baden-Powell we had 5.8 miles to reach our goal of little jimmy campground, which sits at ~7500ft elevation meaning we also have to drop about 1900ft from the peak. This also wasn’t easy as you have to spend a lot of energy slowing momentum to an acceptable level. We finally arrived at little jimmy campground a bit after 6pm. We were quite happy to have reached our goal but there is no rest for the weary as tomorrow’s hike looms. So camp was essentially this: mom nom nom, maps, blog, zzzzZZZzzzzz.

Godspeed.
